Agape Table and Empowerment
We all know that food emergencies do happen in Winnipeg. When food emergencies occur on a regular basis, a cycle becomes apparent. When families rely on emergency food programs on a regular weekly basis, there is a tremendous loss of power. Food bank and soup kitchen clients are offered very little choice or control. Much of the food content in these programs is damaged goods, leftovers, past-due-date food and other otherwise unsalable items. Having to rely on societies leftovers is a fundamentally disempowering experience.
Programs such as Agape Table’s subsidized egg breakfast, and Low Cost Grocery, works constructively with individuals and families to alleviate food emergencies by stretching the purchasing power of the low-income dollar. Low-income patrons pay for a portion of their meals and groceries. This gives them choice, dignity, and power; characteristics that are difficult to find in most emergency food programs. Meals are prepared to order, from restaurant-quality ingredients and are served cafeteria-style. Groceries are purchased from local distributers and producers.
Agape Table works hard to empower those who need assistance accessing food.
